After seven years abroad, Rokuzan returned to Japan in March 1908. Shortly after his return, he established a studio in Shinjuku and began to fulfill his duties as a reformer of Japanese sculpture through his art works, his writings, and exchanges with young Japanese artists. To pursue art, according to Rokuzan, was at the same time to pursue life. Part III seeks to get at his view of art and progress, relying primarily on his editorials in Chōkoku Shinzui [The essence of sculpture], and to draw some inferences as to his view of life.
