writing classes seem to be intimidating situations for linguistically unskilled ESL/EFL learners. One such attempt to reduce this apprehension is the installation of computers, particularly word processing programs, in educational settings. However, there has been a great deal of debate over the effectiveness of the use of the medium. The present article examines writing processes of learners and some pros and cons of word processing programs from the viewpoint of affective filters, especially anxiety. It concludes that computers have the possibility to make a great contribution to instructional contexts, and some pedagogical implications of this consideration are given.
