On 30 March 1999, a nest of the Amami spinous rat Tokudaia osimensis osimensis osimensis was found at Kamiya Forest, Amami-Oshima, Japan. The nest site was on a slope within the primary evergreen broad-leaved forest at Kamiya, Kawauchi Village. The nest was built in a mature Castanopsis sieboldii tree three meters above ground, using a bird's nest-fern Asplenium nidus and a rudimentary stem-fork as a natural platform. The nest itself was constructed of continuous layers of dry nest-fern material, making a ball of about 15cm in diameter with the top somewhat flattened and with grass-like material embedded. Curiously, the nest had neither a real inner cavity nor a distinct entrance. Instead of the latter, three small slit-like openings between the fern layers were detected, probably allowing the rat to escape in different directions.
