The crossability between wheat and rye was examined by pollinating 41 varieties of cultivated wheat (including 4 species in Dinkel group except T. Macha) with the pollens of 3 varieties of rye (Korea. Rosen and Petkuser). On judging the crossability, the percentage of mature hybrids to the number of florets pollinated was used as the criterion. As a result of this experiment, it was found out that the crossability between these two species is different in different varieties of wheat used as a female parent, being neither influenced by the difference of varieties of rye used as a pollen parent, nor by the environmental conditions at the time the crossing was done. In other words, it is a genetical characteristics of the wheat variety itself, showing as a rule values less than 5 per cent. But, generally apeaking, it is high in the indigeneous varieties while it is low in the improved or foreign varieties. The following varieties showing comparatively high crossability, are worth mentioning: NISHIMURA, SENBOKU, NORIN N0.3, N~RIN N0.14, YOSHIDA. On the corrtrary, SAPPORO HARU KOMUGI No. 1, NORlN No. 27, U-13, NANBU KOMUGI, ARDITO and SQUARE HEAD MASTER showed a few or little crossability with rye.
