A water soluble and heat stable substance present in the pericarp of the spinach fruit was found to produce a toxic effect on germinating spinach seeds. The water extract was fractionated by means of lead acetate and calcium carbonate respectively, then the aforesaid toxic substance was isolated. The toxic substance was qualitatively analysed and identified to be oxalic ac'id. 30 mg % or more concentrated oxalic acid solution and it's equivalents (i.e. concentrated oxalate solutions)inhibited radicles of the germinating spinach, which is identical to the effects of pericarp extract and a solution of the substance (oxalic acid). As the spinach pericarp was foun~ to contain 269 mg % of water soluble oxalates and 861mg% of water insoluble oxalates, the authors have arrived at the conclusion that the toxic substance was a soluble 'oxalate accumulated in the pericarp. The same results were obtained also in the case of sugar beet seed. balls.
