Glucocorticoids have been known as the most effective drug for a variety of diseases. Diverse pharmacological effects of the steroids such as anti-inflammation and immunosuppression are all attributed to their anti-anabolic or catabolic action on the basic cell metabolism. On the other hand, glucocorticoids have recently been shown to play a decisive role in inducing or maintaining a large number of differentiated functions of cells, tissues and organs. These physiological functions of glucocorticoids are produced by their anabolic action upon the specialized cell metabolism. In an attempt to get into a unitary understanding of the seemingly opposite actions of glucocorticoids, typical experiments in both pharmacology and physiology were compiled to discuss the problem in terms of the steroid doses or concentrations used.
