Gravelly sand was mixed into loam of tea field. The nitrifying activity of soil, and the growth and nitrogen absorption of tea plant cultured in the soil were investigated. The leaf yield obtained from the soil with large admixture of gravelly sand trended to be greater. The contents of nitrogen and amino acid in new shoot, old leaf and branch were higher in the soil with large admixture. Fungus, actinomycete and bacteria were limited in the soil with large admixture. Especially ammonium-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were less and the rate of nitrification was low. From the above results, mixing of gravelly sand into tea field brought high contents of nitrogen and amino acid in new shoot of tea plant. It is considered to be due to keeping NH_4-N in the soil at high ratio during long period owing to low activity of nitrifying.
