Paddy rice fields in the district of Kujukuri Chiba Prefecture received severe damage from the recent drought which we had never experienced before. With 95 soils of those fields the Neubauer's method was conducted to ascertain the effect of drought on the availability of Nitrogen in those soils. The effect was observed as follows : The amount of available nitrogen increased 20 % in the soil of water-logged condition through the normal year and decreared 20 % in that of water-logged condition not through the year.
