The following is the summary of an experiment made about the influence of the successive use of artificial fertilisers and the parallel use of soybean-cake, compost, green manure and lime with them, upon the crops and the chemical property of the soil. The experiment was made of some paddy soil cultivating rice plant and barley for 12 years and wheat for 2 years in it, and then 12 years later, taking the soil and analysing it chemically. (1) When artificial fertilisers only were used successively for a long time, rice plant showed an almost healthy growth, though a slight tendency was perceptible to reduce in the amount of harvest. On the other hand, in the same condition barley showed irregularity in its growth and began to reduce in the harvest amount from about the 4th year, and from about the 9th year there was almost no harvest. When wheat was cultivated in the same sort of soil, it could grow almost regularly and healthily, but was very much inferior to those which were cultivated by compost and lime together with artificial fertilisers. (2) When soybean-cake was used together with artificial fertilisers for wheat and barley, we did not perceive the marked decrease in the amount of harvest as when they were cultivated with artificial fertilisers only; but in this case we could not perceive almost any effect for increasing their yield. (3) When compost was used with artificial fertilisers, in proportion to its increase with the years, there was a great increase in the crop, especially in the barley crop. (4) Addition of lime to artificial fertilisers for rice cultivation brought about effect in its yield, though not so much as compost did. In this same condition, the crops of barley and wheat were very much larger. (5) When green manure and lime were used with artificial fertilisers, every crop brought a very large yield. (6) Humus and tolal-N in the soil increased by the use of compost and slightly decreased by the addition of lime to it. Addition of soybean-cake had almost nothing to do with the increase of the humus and the tolal-N. (7) Absorbing power of the soil for P_2O_5 was increased by the additional use of compost and lime; but the same power for N was decreased by the use of lime. (8) By the successive use of artificial fertilisers, the soil was acidified and the base in it was markedly decreased, but the additional use of compost controled the acidification and the decrease of base; and the addition of lime prevented the acidification and increased the degree of base saturation. (9) CaO in the soil especially exchangeable CaO was decreased by the successiv use of artificial fertilisers, but the additional use of compost controled its influence, and the addition of lime again increased it. So_3 in fertilisers was carried away with base, especially CaO, and its amount left in the soil was very small. (10) The fact was found that, when there were several kinds of soil with different chemical property accordiag to the use of different fertilisers, the amount of the crops cultivated in them were greatly affected by the reaction of the soil and the total amount of exchangeable CaO, and that the influence was more evident in the case of barley and wheat than rice plant. (11) It was perceived that, in the acidified soil under the successive use of artificial fertilisers, there existed a large amount of exchangeable Al_2O_3,and the amount of the same Al_2O_3 had much to do with the acidity of the additional use of compost controled its existence and that, in the non acidified soil under the additional use of lime, there existed none of it. And the total amount of exchangeable Al_2O_3 had much to do with the amount of the crop : in proportion to the increase of the same Al_2O_3,the crop, especially barley crop, was decreased.
