Experiments were conducted to study the mechanism of nitrate-reduction in paddy field soil and the results obtained will be summarized as follows ;- 1) It was observed that the rate of the nitrate-reduction differs much by soils and the reduction takes place mainly during the first 7 days'standing. 2) The reduction of nitrate was increased with temperature up 35℃. 3) Nitrate was reduced almost equally at any moisture content when it was over the maximum water holding capacity of soil. 4) The rate of reduction was greatly increased by standing soil at neutral or slightly alkaline reaction 5) The loss of nitrogen after 7 days'standing was from 21 to 48% of nitrate-N added and from 32 to 51% after 35 days'. 6) The reduction of nitrate was closely related with the lowering of the potential of soil during standing. 7) The nitrate-reduction was much slighter in the soil stood preyiously with water before nitrate-addition than that in the case both additions were carried out at the same time. From this fact, it may be said that nitrate is reduced mainly during ferrous iron formation and very slightly by ferrous iron produced..
