We have grown the paddy rice in solution culuture and conducted experiments as to the nitrogenous nutrition denied for 16 days at different stages of its growth. The results are, in short, as follows : 1) When denied at the early stage (i. e. for about three weeks after transplanting) the plant was extremely stunted in growth ; however upon being given the element at the end of the fasting period, the plant was soon able to pick up. Having examined the crop at harvest, we have fouund the lower tillers were less in number and yield of grain was somewhat decreased. 2) These harms mentioned above were greater in proportion as the nitrogenous nutrient was denied later in the said stage. 3) When denied at the beginning of tillering stage the harmful effects were comparatively slight, but at the middle and the end of this stage, on receipt of the nitrogenous nutrient after the 16 fasting days, the plant started its unavai lable and abnormal tillering with the result at harvest that the tillers were most numerous but least fruitful and that thd efficiency of the nitrogen upon the cropped grain was the smallest in all experimental series. 4) When denied at the later stage (i. e. when the plant started heading), no harmful effects were to be seen, and rather the want of nitrogenous nutrition had good effect upon the plant. 5) On the contrary when given the nitrogenous nutrition at the later stage, the plant developed less fruitful showing even the harmful effects due to the excess of the nitrogen.
