In order to develop nitrification inhibitors, more than twenty hydantoin derivatives were synthesized and subjected to the nitrification inhibitor test and then to the mineralization test, phytotoxicity test, toxicity test to fish, and bacterial growth test. C-5 alkylidenehydantoins and N-alkylmaleinimides compounds were found to inhibit the nitrification of ammonium-N from urea. Both are new materials as nitrification inhibitors. Especially, N-alkylmaleinimides are more active than an existing nitrification inhibitor, Dd (dicyano-diamide). These compounds offer a potential as new nitrification inhibitors.
