Nitrogen utilization by wetland rice was studiedd using four species of Azolla : A. microphylla, A. pinnata var. imbricata, A. pinnata var. pinnata, and A. mexicana. Azolla species with different N contents were obtained by changing the p nutrition, and were used as fertilizers for rice to compare the effect of urea. In one experiment, ^15N labeled Azolla was used, and the ^15N recoveries in two consecutive rice crops were studied in field microplots. A. microphylla showed the highest N contents, and A. pinnata var. pinnata the lowest. A laboratory incubation study carried out during a period of 8 weeks showed that Azolla with a low N percentage in every species. The field experiments showed that Azolla with a low N percentage in every species. The field experiments showed that Azolla N increased the rice grain yield in spite of the wide range of N contents, from 1.8-3.6%. To achieve the same N uptake by rice and the same increase in grain yield as from urea application. Azolla must contain at least 3.2% N. As in the case of the laboratory incubation data, N mineralization from A. pinnata var. pinnata was slow in the field, leading to poor rice growth. The Azolla N content and the N uptake by rice were significantly correlated (r=0.89). The recoveries of ^15N by rice were also proportional to the Azolla N contents (r=0.73) and were always higher from Azolla with a high N content than from the same Azolla species with a low N content. Recoveries in the second rice crop of residual ^15N after the first rice crop were higher from urea than from Azolla. It may be concluded that in spite of the wide variations in the N content in various species, Azolla is an effective N fertilizer for wetland rice, and that the N content of Azolla primarily determines the fertilizer effect.
