The behavior of native and added phosphorus during rice cultivation was analyzed using paddy soil samples belonging to the major soil groups in Thailand and the main sources of available phosphorus to rice plants were examined. 1) In the Acid Sulfate soil samples, Ca-P and Al-P, and also under the reductive-submerged treatment, Fe-P appeared to be important sources of available phosphorus. Added phosphorus accumulated mainly as Al-P and Fe-P at first, and then a part of accumulated Al-P was either utilized by the rice plants transformed into Fe-P during rice cultivation and subsequent soil desiccation. 2) In the Fresh Water Alluvial soil samples, the main source of available phosphorus was considered to be Fe-P. Added phosphorus accumulated as Al-P and Fe-P, a part of which was utilized by the rice plants while the rest was considered to form Oc-P rapidly during the process of soil desiccation. 3) In the Low Humic Gley loamy soil samples that contained relatively large amounts of Org-P and organic matter, Org-P appeared to be the source of available phosphorus, in addition to Al-P and Fe-P. Most of the added phosphorus accumulated as Al-P and Fe-P, a part of which was utilized by the rice plants. The availability of accumulated Fe-P was lower than that of accumulated Al-P. 4) In the Grumusol samples, the source of available phosphorus was considered to be Al-P and Fe-P as well as Oc-P. Added P accumulated as Al-P and Fe-P at first, then a part of accumulated Al-P was utilized by the rice plants or immobilized to form Org-P. The remaining part of accumulated Al-P was transformed into Fe-P during rice cultivation and subsequent soil desiccation. 5) In the Low Humic Gley sandy soil samples, Ca-P,, Al-P, and Fe-P were thought to be the sources of available phosphorus. Added phosphorus accumulated mainly as Al-P. A part of accumulated Al-P was available to the rice plants or was immobilized as Oc-P and Fe-P. 6) In all the soil samples, the Org-P content increased during rice cultivation. This newly formed Org-P may be rapidly mineralized and a part of it may be utilized by the rice plants.
