SUSCEPTIBILITY OF UNDISTURBED SOILS TO COMPRESSION AS EVALUATED FROM THE CHANGES IN THE SOIL WATER CHARACTERISTIC CURVES

Undisturbed cores of fourteen soils were compressed under hydrostatic stresses, and the resultant soil water characteristic curves as well as the changes in the void ratio and water content of the soils by compression were determined. As the applied total stress increased, air-filled pores were lost first, and thereafter compression accompanied with the extrusion of excess pore water proceeded. Loss of pore volume caused by the compression was more pronounced for coarser pores with smaller drainage suctions. The ranges of the size of the pores lost or collapsed, as assessed from the changes in the soil water characteristic curves, were narrower than those expected on the assumption that the applied stress was counter-balanced exclusively by the increase in the overburden pore water pressure. Moreover, the range differed greatly among the soils used, reflecting the differences in the susceptibility of the soils to compression. From the magnitude of the applied total stress and the upper limit of the suction range for which the modification of the soil water characteristic curve proceeded, compression susceptibility x, defined as the ratio of the equilibrium overburden water pressure to the applied total stress, was evaluated for each soil. s is identical to the load factor of CRONEY and COLEMAN (1953) and its value ranged from 0.016 for a coarse-textured Gray Lowland soil to 0.41 for a fine-textured Yellow soil. The relation of compression susceptibility of the soils to their shrinkage behavior is also discussed.
