Nitrogen mobilization in sprouting of the second flush was investigated in the attached old leaves of tea plants. Contents of chlorophyll, free amino acids, caffeine, total protein, soluble protein, ribosome and activities of proteinases were determined. the loss of leaf nitrogen was mainly due to the decrease of the total protein fraction. The content of soluble protein markedly declined at the stage of bud-opening, and then gradually recovered. The loss of the total and soluble protein was 36 and 54%, respectively. Debudding treatment partially reduced the degree of the decline of these constituents. ribosome contents of old leaves began to decline with bud-opening and showed the minimum content when the first and second leaf opened, after which it rapidly recovered. The activities of proteinases increased in the sprouting of the flush. But the changes of the activities had no or little relation with the loss of the soluble protein fraction.
