The inositol phosphate (IP) and inositol in humic and fulvic acid fractions (HA and FA, respectively) of soil extracts were determined in order to elucidate the chemical nature of the organic phosphate (org-P) in soils. In HA, only inositol hexaphosphate (IP_6) was recognized, while in FA, IP_6 and other inositol phosphates were recognized as major and minor forms, respectively. Among the inositol isomers, myo- and scyllo-inositol were found in HA obtained by the resin-acetyl acetone extraction method but only myo-inositol was found in HA obtained by two other methods. In FA, myo-inositol was most abundant and chiro- and scyllo-inositol existed as minor forms. Much larger amounts of IP in HA were expected than those obtained by the conventional methods for determining the IP in FA. The org-P in HA was judged to consist of IP, while that in FA was judged to consist of both IP and other org-P compounds.
