MUTUAL FLOCCULATION BETWEEN SELECTED CLAY MINERALS AND SOME KINDS OF ASEXUAL SPORES FROM SOIL-BORNE FUNGI

Effects of clay minerals on the electrophoretic mobility and sedimentation of fungal spores were investigated. The separated spores of some fungal species, i.e., Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, F. solani f. sp. pisi, Trichoderma viride and Rhizopus nigricans could be successfully suspended in water, and showed to have negative electrophoretic mobility above pH ca. 3. In acidic media (pH 4.0-5.5), the negative electrophoretic mobility of the spores decreased to zero by the addition of the positively-charged allophane and imogolite, and mutual flocculation between the clays and the spores was observed. On the contrary, Na-montmorillonite and Na-halloysite which were shown to have negative mobility could not flocculate the fungal spores even at pH ca. 4-6.
