The activity of caseolytic enzyme was determined in the first leaves of maize and wheat plants grown under nitrogen-deficient conditions. An enhancement of enzyme activity compared with the normal plants was found to start from the 5th day after supplement lacking nitrogen, and about 4-fold increase in the enzyme activity of maize plants and 2.5-fold increase in that of wheat plants were observed at the 7th day. The supplementation of Ca(NO_3)_2 to nitrogen-deficient plants at the 7th day resulted in restoration of the caseolytic enzyme activity to the normal level after 3 days. Total nitrogen, soluble protein as well as chlorophyll were found to return to the normal level over the same period. These findings are discussed in relation to the metabolic pattern of plants at the early stage of nitrogen deficiency.
