The effect of heavy metals on the adsorption of manganese from solution was studied in dead root of Unshu and living root of trifoliate orange. The experiment was carried out at the time intervals from 5 min to 3 hr. Adsorption of manganese increased with time and the percentage of manganese adsorption decreased with manganese concentration. Adsorption of manganese was suppressed by the metals on both the dead and living roots in the following order Fe<Zn<Cu<Cd. Only a slight difference was found between the adsorption ratio of the dead and living roots. The percentage of final adsorption by the root to the initial concentration of solution also followed the order Mn<Fe<Zn<Cu<Cd.
