Concern about the utilization of hardly soluble phosphate compounds accumulated in arable lands in relation to the limited amount of phosphate resources in the world has increased. For the solubilization and utilization of the hardly soluble phosphate compounds, research on the exudates from plant roots is important. Hirata et al.(1982), Gardner et al.(1983), and Dinkelaker et al.(1989)reported on the secretion of organic acids from plant roots. Organic acids acids acting as a metal chelating agent may release phosphate from iron or aluminium phosphate by forming a compound with iron or aluminium ions in soils. Lipton et al.(1987), Hoffland et al.(1989), and Ohwaki and Hirata(1992)reported that plants grown in a phosphorus-starved environment secreted larger amounts of organic acids than those grown in a phosphorus-sufficient environment. The secretion of organic acids may be an efficient and strategic response to the deficiency of phosphorus. The authors grew several species of plants using a phosphorus-deficient nutrient solution and identified organic acids in the nutrient solution. As a result, some organic acids including formate were identified in the nutrient solution where peanut and alfalfa were grown. No description of the formate secretion in the nutrient solution has been reported so far. Formate is the only organic acid showing a strong reducing capacity and it is considered to contribute, in cooperation with other reductants secreted from the roots(Brown and Ambler 1973; White and Robson 1989), to the solubilization of iron phosphate in the rhizosphere. This report deals with a study on peanut seedlings.
