In order to elucidate the mechanism of transport of CO_2 absorbed by rice roots, a method for the direct collection of gas from the medullary cavity of the rice plant was established and the CO_2 concentrations in the medullary cavity and bleeding sap of the rice plant were determined. CO_2 concentration in the medullary cavity was enhanced by CO_2 enrichment in the culture solution. The transport of CO_2 absorbed by the rice roots was demonstrated and it was concluded that the greater part of CO_2 absorbed by the roots was transferred to the tops of rice in the gaseous state. In this report, a hypothesis on the transport of CO_2 absorbed by the rice roots was proposed.
