In order to establish a unified comprehensive classification system for Japanese soils, the author attempted to set up an approximation according to the genetic principle. The nature of this system is multicategorical and morpho-genetic. Categorical taxa consist of soil phylum, class, order, group, subgroup, species, subspecies, variety and phase in descending order. The basic unit is soil group or genetic soil type which is systematized to higher categories and divided into lower ones. Within this framework, the focus of this paper is brought into the soil group and subgroup. The author arranged all existing soil groups which had been reported and/or found by himself and his colleagues, Japanese pedologists. He then divided them into one to several soil subgroups which consist of typic, intergrades. towards other soil groups and extragrades depending on certain specific features. In Table 1 one find the taxonomical seat and general soil horizon sequence of each soil subgroup which is also correlated with the soil unit in FAO/UNESCO's World Soil Map and with the soil subgroup in the Soil Taxonomy of USDA.
