Changes in the distribution patterns of Cd and Pb were studied using an electron probe X-ray microanalyzer (EPMA) after dipping rice roots in metal solutions. The Cd concentration increased sharply up to 120 min after the dipping but did not change thereafter, suggesting that translocation from the roots to the top increased significantly after 120 min. Between 120 and 360 min after the Cd treatment, the distribution pattern of Cd changed remarkably, although the Cd concentration remained rather constant. It appeared that Pb was absorbed more slowly by the roots and translocated less to the cytoplasm than Cd.
