Young cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata L.) were grown for 80 days, varying the amount of Ca, Mg or S supplied, shortening the period of each nutrient supply or supplying each nutrient at different stages of growth, and the effects of these treatments on cabbage-head formation were investigated. The cabbage-head yield increased with increase in the Ca, Mg or S concentration in the culture solution from 0 to 100 ppm Ca, 25 ppm Mg or 100 ppm S. It decreased slightly at 1,000 ppm Ca, and greatly at 250 ppm Mg. The critical Ca, Mg and S contents which resulted in a 50% decrease in cabbage-head yield due to each deficiency were 1.1, 0.15 and 0.04% on a dry weight basis, respectively. Plants deficient in these nutrients contained less sugars. The longer the period of each nutrient supply (100 ppm Ca, 25 ppm Mg or 10 ppm S), the higher was the cabbage-head yield. The contribution of Mg and S per unit weight to cabbage-head formation was the highest at the first growth stage (i.e. outer-leaf expansion phase) and became smaller at the later cabbage-head development stages. The difference in the contribution of Ca among the growth stages was smaller than that of Mg and S. Ca supplied for 20 days at any of the four growth stages did not produce an ordinary cabbage-head, but Mg and S at the first or second growth stage produced a large cabbage-head. That is to say, the importance of Mg and S in cabbage-head formation lies in the early growth stages, while Ca is always required during the whole growth stage.
