Solution culture experiments were conducted to determine the effects of various ratios of calcium and potassium on corm formation in taro, and also to examine the disorders induced in the plants by the omission of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium and boron, respectively, from the culture solution. The growth of taro was fairly good under each treatment except those excluding potassium, phosphorus and magnesium from the culture solution. The results indicated that the solution culture method is a useful technique for conducting such experiments. The highest marketable yields of corms (excluding "Metsubure" corms and mother corms) were recorded for the Wasehasubaimo cultivar in a culture solution with a calcium-potassium ratio of 4-4 in me/liter and for the Ishikawawasemaru cultivar in a solution with a calcium-potassium ratio of 8-4. When the calcium-potassium ratio was smaller, however, the marketable yield decreased significantly and the total yield percentage of "Metsubure" corms increased for both cultivars. The nutrient contents of the organs varied with the changes in calcium-potassium concentrations of the culture solution. Based on the suggested relationship between the calcium content of taro organs and "Metsubure" corm formation, measurement of the calcium content of the main leaves is expected to provide diagnostic information on both the calcium nutrition of the corms and "Metsubure" corm formation. Various kinds of damage to the growth and quality of the corms were observed by omitting certain elements from the culture solution. Many "Metsubure" corms were formed with the boron-deficient treatment under sufficient calcium supply. This is therefore presumed to represent another causative factor in "Metsubure" corm formation in taro.
