The influences of digestion methods on ICP-MS measurements for Be, V, Ga, Sb, La, and Bi in organic fertilizers were evaluated. The dry ashing method, the 6 M HCl reflux method and the HNO_3 decomposition method in a pressurized vessel were inappropriate because of their low extractability for the metals. The HNO_3-HClO_4 digestion method and the aqua regia digestion method were unsuitable for V. The results obtained by ICP-MS after the HNO_3-HClO_4-HF digestion method agreed well with those obtained by atomic absorption spectrometry. The recoveries of the other 29 metals and semimetals, Li, Sc, Co, Ni, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Mo, Ag, Cd, Cs, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Tl, Pb, Th, and U, by this digestion were fairly satisfactory. Therefore, the HNO_3-HClO_4-HF digestion method was found to be suitable for the multi-elemental analysis of various metals and semimetals in organic fertilizers by ICP-MS.
