Study was made of variation of the chemical composition of rice plonts at harvest under uniformity trial. Coefficient of variation is the greatest in weight of grain, and decreases in the following order : Weight of straw, concentration of phosphorus, manganese, nitrogen, magnesium, calcium, silicon, potassium. With the exception of manganese, the greater the degree of migration to ears, the greater the coefficient of variation. Errors due to chemical analysis is very small as compared to that due to sampling. Accordingly, in studying nutrient absorption of crops growing in the field, number of replication of samples is more decisive factor than to raise the accuracy of chemical analysis. Variation in chemical composition grain is smaller than that of straw. Positive correlation was found between concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in straw. The authors made a table to attain the desired accuracy at 75% probability. The authors are greatly indebted to Dr. OKUNO statistician of National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, and also Mr. MORI, and SUZUKI of Tokyo Agricultural Experiment Station who kindly permitted to take rice plant samples from their farm.
