Clay minerals present in four Red-Yellow soils derived from the Pleistocene sediments in Central Japan and Northern Kyushu were identified by X-ray, differential thermal, and chemical analyses, and electron microscopy. These soils are dominated by kaolin minerals, probably unusual halloysite which is an irregular flacky particle having round outlines. Although it is not clear whether such finely divided particles have been formed by the decomposition of rodlike particles, the common occurrence of them can be seen in Red-Yellow soils developed under acidic and intensive leaching condition.Gibbsite increases with depth in the soils of Central Japan. In particular, the predominance of gibbsite in the Kano and the Takashihara soils is striking. Such a fact has also been observed in the case of hornblende-andesitic ash soils according to unpublished data obtained by the writers. The increase of gibbsite in the lower horizon may be considered to be one of the most characteristic features of some cumulative soils with varying amounts of volcanic ash developed under mesothermal and perhumid conditios.Furthermore, all the specimens contain vermiculite, illite, hydrated halloysite, rodlike halloysite, amourphous aluminosilicates, and srystalline hydrous oxides of Fe. The vermiculite present in these soils resembles the description of dioctahedral vermiculite reported by Brown. Chloritic minerals are also found in the Kano soil. Feldspars and quartz occur in all the specimens.
