The effect of synthetic soil conditoners to prevent paddy field from leaking was investigated.(1) Four synthetic soil conditioners (VAMA, HPAN, CMC, PVA) were spead in the middle layer of soil in the small lysimeter. The lysimeters were irrgated, and the amount of the leaked water was estimated continuously for 60 days.a) VAMA and HPAN were very effective to prevent soil from leaking perfectly when used 2g per 40cm^2.b) CMC was less effective than VAMA, and PVA could not prevent soil from leaking.c) Ca(OH)_2,CaCO_3,Al_2(SO_4)_3,FeCl_3,and two surfactants were mixed with the conditioners. But their preventing effcts did not increase.d) Soil conditioners were mixed in the upper part of soil, but, in this case, they were less effective than in the case when they were spread in a thin layer.e) Soil conditoners applied to the lysimeter and dried at 40〜50℃ and then irrigated, but, in this case the preventing effect of conditioners on leaking was not observed.(2) The efficiency of conditioner (Aerotil) for the improvement of leaky paddy field was estimated by planting rice plants in pots. Consequently, it was observed that the improving effect of conditioner was distinguished and yield of rice correspondingly increased.
