The puropose of this study was to compare the methods for evaluating consistency limits and constants as a measure of soil tilth. Plastic and liquid limit, degree of penetration, natural and ultimate breaking strength and crushing strength were employed herein to evaluate the soil physical condition. The results obtained with heavy clayey polder soils had shown that the technique employed here could be used as a useful means for characterizing the physical properties of soil. It was found that the tilth of gypsum and Kriliumtreated soils, and also of pastured soil was more favorably improved as compared with that of standard soil. It has been concluded that the degree of penetration and natural breaking strength determined with non-puddled sample seemed to offer better means for characterizing soil tilth than the crushing strength and ultimate breaking strength determined with puddled sample.
