We studied the effect of a modified form of polyvinyl alcohol fiber (43.4, 86.8, and 173.5 μg/mL), an asbestos substitute, with and without a metabolic activation system on chromosomal aberrations in a Chinese hamster cell line (CHL/IU cells). The fiber did not increase the frequency of polyploidy or of cells with structural aberrations under various exposure conditions.
