Oil Orange SS, 1-[(2-methylphenyD azo] -2-naphthalenol is one of the azo-dyes which was classified in Group 2B compound (possible human carcinogen) by IARC. Groups of four male rats were orally administered this compound at 500 to 2,000 mg/kg twice at 24 h intervals and the bone marrow and peripheral blood were examined 24 h after the last treatment. Oil Orange SS induced a significant increase of polychromatic erythrocytes and reticulocytes with micronuclei, indicative of a clastogen.
