In the 1st report (Tetsu to Hagane, 40, Jan. 1945, No.1 p. 12∿24) authors described that local exfoliation of the flat ingot mould at the earliar stage of its use was caused by the local heating of an inner surface of the ingot mould and thereby a rapid growth of graphite on account of the decomposition of pearlite and/or decarburization occurred. Authors made research on the prevention of these defects by some fundamental experiments and reported four versatile counter-measures for this purpose as follows : 1) Shortening, as far as possible, the time of stripping of ingot out of the mould. 2) Determination of the most adequate value of the Mn content. 3) Innovation of the design of its profile, the section and the wall-thickness for increase of the cooling effect, especially at the height of one third from its bottom. 4) Arrangement of ingot moulds at the teeming mill. By the way, this kind of exfoliation was a "crazing", and then the chemical composition must not be failed from our consideration. Accordingly in this report, the authors made research on the influence of miscellaneous values of Mn content of the ingot moulds upon the detrimental growth of graphite. The authors designed the special ingot mould which had open pipes in the wall of it so that mould should not be locally heated and investigated the cooling effect and reconfirmed the correlation between heating position and the position of exfoliaton by means of measuring the heating and cooling curves as in the same way in the last study. Besides, the authors investigated the vital influencing factors upon the durability of the ingot mould. i. e. frequency of the use of ingot cases and the time of stripping of ingot out of the mould as predicted in the 1st report.
