We tried study on surface of castings by the roughness tester made by one of the authors. The outline of the experiment is as fallows : (1) The methods of measuring roughness are (a) Tracer method ; used for laboratory test (b) Light cross-section method ; used for workshop test (2) The grain distribution and roughness of the foundry sand from Kawaguchi were examined. Grain distribution affects remarkably the roughness of surface of castings. The larger the grain, the rougher the surface. (3) Humidity and surface roughness of green sand mold affect the surface of castings. The more the humidity and the rougher the surface of sand, the rougher the surface of castings.
