The committee adopted the following subjects to study : -(1) Gas producer operations, (2) Rational use of fuel oil, (3) Substitute materials for furnace bed, (4) Refractory bricks, (5) High quality high carbon ((6) low carbon) steel making by basic open hearth process, (7) Semi-killed steel, (8) Ordinary steel from electric arc furnace, (9) Use of oxygen in open hearths, (10) Design of open hearth construction. Meetings were held twelve times since Aug. 1948, once at Yawata, twice at Amagasaki, the remainder at Tokyo. All but one subjects have not yet come to conclusions. Investigations of the use of oxygen in open hearths were carried out in co-operation with the joint experimentation of eight leading steelmaking companies, a complete report of which was published in Aug. 1950, As partial conclusions of the study of design of open hearth furnaces, standard dimensions for oil firing open hearths of 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100t capacity, and those for producer gas firing open hearths of 40, 50, 60 and 80t capacity were recently determined, which will be soon published.
