Method of producing nickel-rich iron from ores containing 20∿50% Fe, 0.2∿0.1% Ni, 0.05∿0.3% Co, 1∿3% Cr was studied. It was found that by partial reduction most of the Ni and Co were collected in a small amount of reduced iron. By this method iron containing 5∿10% Ni, 1∿2% Co was easily produced. The present paper gives suitable range of temperature, duration of reduction, as well as the slag composition neccessary for obtaining nickel-rich iron. Finally considerations on the type of furnaces used to carry this process on an industrial scale were given.
