The electric characteristics of the electric furnace for manufacturing synthetic graphite electrodes were generally studied as the presupposition of the possibility of the efficient mass production of the electrodes. The result was as follows : (1) The specific resistance of the pulverized resistance-heating-element filling the space between electrodes, which have not been graphitized yet, becomes lower in accordance with the higher compression, the larger grain size and the more elevated temperature. (2) The apparent specific resistance within the electric furnace stands in proportion to the ratio of the clearance between two cylindrical electrodes to the electrode diameter, and becomes lower as the clearance narrows. The distribution of the specific resistance within the electric furnace is not uniform due to the difference of weights of pulverized heating-element and other substances, due to the cylindrical form of electrodes, and due to the different type of arranging electrodes. (3) When alternative current is applied to the furnace, an effect of mechanical stress on the current of the magnetic field becomes slightly visible. As for the reactance, that due to electro-magnetic induction alone is visible. Besides, the surface action is not so much visible in the heretofore used I-type furnace, but fairly remarkable in the case of the special U-type furnace, and the current concentrates to inside. (4) The total impedance during loading of the electric furnace may be estimated as the D. C. resistance value as to the resistance factor ; and as to the reactance factor, it may be estimated by calulating the total of the furnace as if it were reciprocating two cylinders with different diameters. (5) Finally the actual loading characteristic curves were obtained as shown in the text.
