Surface-specific infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) technique has been used to obtain surface vibrational spectra of poly (vinyl alcohol). The sharp peak at 2910 cm^<-1> in the ssp (SF output, VIS input and IR input being s-, s-, and p-polarized respectively) polarization combination SFG spectrum can be identified as due to CH_2 groups that are mostly pointing Up. A forward-backward anisotropy of the symmetric CH_2 stretch peak intensity was detected after the mechanical rubbing treatment. From this anisotropy, it is concluded that the polymer chains are not lying perfectly fiat on the surface but are slightly tilted.
