The most important factor in steel melting process is the oxidizing power of molten slag. If the oxidation of steel bath is not sufficient, the removal of the impurities such as C, Si, P, H, and etc. is difficult, but if it is excessive, the dooxidation is difficult and the nonmetallic inclusions increase. Thus the melters control the oxidizing power of molten slag by adding ore, lime, sand, carbon, and other oxidizing or reducing substances. Heretofore the slag control has been performed merely by their experiences. The steel melting process would be improved, if we could find any method, which permits to measure the oxidizing power of the molten slag in the course of melting. The author intended to measure it electrochemically. Measurements were made with a concentration cell of the type "platinum I, oxygen partial pressure I/molten slag. I/molten slag/molten slag II/oxygen partial pressure II, platinum II". The potential difference produced by the different oxygen activity of the molten slag, that is, produced by the different oxidizing power of the molten slag was precisely measured according with the change of the oxygen partial pressure in the vessels containing the molten slag.
