This paper describes a new method of tool management using a handheld computer, which has just been in a market and has a potentiality for many applications. The authors try to put the computer into a machine shop where an operator takes care of matching of a cutting tool and tool data. By combining the barcode labeled on a cutting tool and the computer with 16 bits, 768 kbytes memory, light weight of 250 g and compact size, the operator can put cutting tool data to the computer easily and carry them with cutting tools. At the machine tools, he can set cutting tool at any tool pot of the machine tools. And he can input the tool information to the NC controller and get the information from the machine tools to the computer. Following advantages are obtained by the new tool management system : (1) The computer can install sufficient data; cutting tool file, tool offset data, machine tool file, NC tape data. (2) All the cutting data and NC data can be transferred between a machine shop and tool crib all the time with cutting tools. (3) Barcode can be used for rewriting an index and for referring the data in the computer. (4) The computer can calculate an offset value referring the standard cutting path, errors of the cutting tool and type of machine tools. The system provides more reliable cutting tool management and setting-up time saving by 15%.
