Shellfish resources provide substantial source of animal protein for the people in the Republic of Kiribati. The Fishreies Division of the Republic is concerned with the fact that these stocks are under threat of over-exploitation because of rapid population increase as well as intensive urbanization near major shell beds in southern Tarawa. The present study was carried out to find basic biological and ecological information concerning shellfish resoruces in Tarawa Lagoon, in order to assess and develop measures in resource management as well as stock enhancement of important species, including application of spat-collection and transplanting seedstocks. Overharvesting of the bivalve shell "te bun"(Snadara maculosa) is likely to be in progress in South Tarawa, as the stocks of easy-access are apparently depleted in areas such as urban Bikenibeu. However, a gastropod stock of "te nouo"(Strombus Luhuanus) was very abundant of the lagoon floors. Population of te bun and other important species are probably exhibiting temporally and spatially heterogeneous fluctuations in Tarawa Lagoon, reflecting unpredictable larval transport, dispersal and settling processes. Larvae of te bun and some other important bivalve species were identified in plankton samples collected in the Lagoon. Post-settlement juveniles of te bun were found attached on coconut-husk spat-collectors submersed in the lagoon water near the shell bed. Artificial spat-collection of juvenile te bun may be feasible, proveded its major spawning period was identified; the length of larval period and settling time could be prodicted; and good spat-collection sites were assessed, after more substantial field study.
