In a small community (households 83,population 355) in Wakayama prefecture, food poisoning of 53 patients occurred in July, 1965. From the stools of 13 patients, organisms which were agglutinated with Shigella dysenteriae 7 antiserum were isolated. The morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of those organisms were identical with those of Plesiomonas shigelloides (Habs and Schubert, 1962). Moreover, it is confirmed that the isolate was a new serotype possessing an antigen common to Sh. dysenteriae 7. Ferguson and Henderson in 1947 described the bacteria group paracolon C 27,and, subsequently, opinions have varied from time to time with respect to the taxonomical position : Pseudomonas shigelloides, Pseudomonas michigani, Aeromonas shigelloides and Plesiomonas shigelloides : According to the taxonomical studies of A. shigelloides by Habs and Schubert, A. shigelloides should be distinguished from other Aeromonas species (A. hydrophila and A. salmonicida), and the nomination of the genus Plesiomonas was proposed. The views of Habs and Schubert, basedon biochemical characteristics, were supported by Eddy and Carpenter in the Adansonian analysis. Otherwise, Sebald and Veron, who had studied the GC contents of DNA of the organisms, maintained that A. shigelloides should be excluded from genus Aeromonas, and proposed the nomination of the genus Fergusonia. In this paper, our initial step was the isolation of a few strains from Wakayama, and other strains of P. shigelloides were further obtained from 14 other sources. Morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of these strains were examined, based on the opinions mainly of Habs and Schubert. The serological characteristics were examined according to Sakazaki et al.
