A software system (SN-FORTH) has been developed to control behavior experiments on the Apple II. SN-FORTH allows simplified programming of behavioral procedures based on the concept of state notation. Using FORTH as the environment for system operation, SN-FORTH enables programmers to utilize built-in module routines (FORTH words) for various functions, such as arithmetic operations, logical operations, variable manipulations, array manipulations, etc. Furthermore, since FORTH is highly extensible, programmers can easily define and use their own special purpose FORTH words if necessary. Although the system is primarily designed to control a single experimental station, it is capable of conducting several independent experiments simultaneously.
