Whistler delivered a lecture entitled Ten O'Clock for the first time in 1885,and expresed his opinions of art. But his artistic creed had already established during late 1870s. In 1888 Mallarme translated Ten O'Clock into French and was on intimate terms with the painter. Maurice Denis had been a pupil of the high school where MalIarme had teached English, and frequented Mallarme's Tuesday evening gatherings. It was sufficently possible that he could know Whistler's ideas through the poet. In 1890,the twenty -year-old painter formulated a new definition of a painting in The Definition of Neo-Traditionalism. This manifesto is regaded as a theoretical foundation for the painting of the tewntieth century Denis' conception bears many resemblances to the one maintained in Whistler's Ten O'Clock Lecture. If we had found the obvious fact that Denis came in contach with Whistler's opinions about painting, we could definitely consider Whistler in connection with modern painting and had to revaluate his position in modem art history.
