We overview the merger scenario for the built-up of SMBHs from IMBHs, and IMBHs from massive stars. The finding of the intermediate-mass black hole (candidate) in M82 invited the complete change in the theoretical understanding of the formation of supermassive black holes, since the IMBHs, formed in compact clusters close to the centers of galaxies, look like the most natural building blocks for SMBHs in spiral galaxies. In this paper, we present the scenario for the formation of SMBH in which IMBHs play a key role, and discuss recent theoretical and numerical results, as well as observational ones, on the key stages of the scenario.
