It is the purpose of this paper to understand the significance of the May 30 Incident confining our attention on the situation in Shanghai. The paper is the outgrowth of my visit to China and the stage of the Incident in 1966,and my earlier economic survey in Shanghai around 1936. The big changes in the society made it necessary for me to study the circumstances in which they took place. In this paper, we describe the condition of factory workers, their sabotage and strike, the counteraction taken by the factory management, the intervention of the state power, and the resulting general strike by factory workers, merchants and students. The protracted strike made its continuation economically difficult, and the workers went back to their work through the maneuver by the Chinese bourgeois represented by the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce. By describing the developments of workers' movement, we try to show the significance of the Incident in modern Chinese history.
