In this paper the writer tries to analyze the change in price system in response to the western impacts which followed the arrival of Cammodore Perry. Though precise statistics of prices is not Yet available, the statistics of prices compiled by the Kinyu-kenkyukai in 1938, which covers the period 1830∼1937, is comprehensive and useful as concerns this study. Depending on this statistics the writer deals with the general prices of commodities compared with rice price instead of the general price index, because the general price index before 1878 is unavailable. The beginning of free trade brought about the drastic the drastic changes in the relative prices of commodities, besides the rapid rise of the general price level. 1) The prices of exported goods such as silk and tea rose rapidly by the effect of trade. Especially the relative price of the export in 1859. 2) On the contrary, the prices of imported goods and competing goods with the import like cotton, sugar and oil fell largely since 1868. 3) The prices of other Commodities were neutral. Such a Change in the price system gave great effect on Japan's traditional economy. Silk reeling industry enjoyed the comparative initial advantage, but the competing traditional industry with the import suffered heavily by the rapid fall of prices. The transition from traditional price system to the new system came to an end by 1888∼1892. In responding to the transition in the price system Jatan had to modernize and industrialize the economy.
