Statistical analyses of Russian industry before World War I show us that heavy industry (the machine industry and so on) and light industry (the textile industry and so on) had developed considerably and that the chemical industry and the nonferrous industry had already begun to develop. During this period Germany was exportig machines, chemical products, nonferrous metals and so on in large quantities to Russia. The importation of these products from Germany became a menace to the various developing Russian industries and on the eve of World War I, antipathy against these imports was growing. This led to trade friction between Russia and Germany. Russia had to export a large quantity of grain to sustain industrialization. Statistical analyses of Russian agriculture show us that grain production increased at the beginning of the 20th century. But the development of industry increased domestic consumption of grain. As a result, Russian grain exports on the eve of World War I were showing a tendency to decrease. This slowed the pace of Russian industrialization. On the eve of World War I, Russian industrialization stood at a turning point.
