In Japan Neo-Confucianism, that is to say, Chu Shi philosophy and Wang Yang-ming philosophy developed in the early Tokugawa period. Kumazawa Banzan (1619-1691) was one of the representative Conficianists in the Edo period. He studied Confucianism under Nakae Tooju (1608-1648), who is generally regarded as the founder of the Wang Yang-ming school in this country. It is possible to take the view that Banzan accepted the doctrines of Wang Yang-ming. But he did not necessarily follow the teachings of Tooju. Banzan appreciated the doctrines of Chu Shi although his teacher bitterly criticized Chu Shi philosophy. In the end, Banzan attempted to make a compromise between Wang Yang-ming system and Chu Shi system. Banzan, however, was not only a scholar but also an actual government administrator. It is a well-known fact that he engaged in administration in Okayama Han. Moreover, even after he resigned the post of bangashira in Okayamna Han, he still continued to have a great interest in an actual government and to advocate concrete socio-economic policies. While the early Tokugawa period saw the first appearance of the socio-economic thought in Japan, he, no doubt, took the lead in establishing the socio-economic thought. Consequent1y, any considerationa of Banzan gaku (Banzan philosophy) cannot overlook his socio-economic thought, namely, his view of man and society or the mode of his thought that formed the basis of his concrete socio-econaomic policies. One of the purposes of this article is to survey characteristics of his socio-economic thought as the foundation of his policies. To conclude, his thought involved distinct elements from those of the doctrines of Wang Yang-ming and Chu Shi though they do not wholly contradict each other. The key subject of this article is to study Banzan's peculiar usage of the doctrines of Neo-Confucianism. In conclusion it may be said that he used the doctrines in order to theorize his view of man and society or the mode of his thought as the foundation of his socio-economic policies. In other words, he used the doctrines in differeut ways from those in which they had been used in China.
